This is because the stable version of Debian's shipped kernel does not support the Intel ICH7 SATA controller present on these boards. If you can build your own kernel while installing some other way (e.g. I do this sometimes by getting remote hands to boot from a gentoo live cd with output redirected to serial console, then I debootstrap and build my own kernel to boot into), or if you're going to use etch, then you should be fine. I have ordered 2 of these servers in the last week but they haven't arrived yet. I will run etch on them. I have had the exact same issue with ICH6 on other supermicro motherboards.
