LAST QUESTION: what package do i need to measure cpu-usage? (valgrind maybe??)
I don't think valgrind is what you're after. "top" is a console program that does what you want (and is a required package in Debian), or there's gnome-system-manager (in package of the same name), an X tool that does much the same job.

top is certainly what i am looking for! nv gives on my machine no troubles with cpu-usage. the maximum is at normal use (playing my beloved pink-floyd) roundabout 3-6 percent.

thanks again,

steef

I like htop better.
