Make sure your system is completely up to date, especially if you are
running testing/unstable. For example, there were some fontconfig
related bugs some weeks ago. 

Run (as root): dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig-config
and make sure your fonts are correctly set up for your monitor (TFT vs.
CRT).

You could also try different fonts, to make sure this isn't a problem
specific to a font package.

If nothing of the above helps, I suggest you take a screenshot of the
fonts, provide more details about your system and set up and ask again
on the list.
