Make sure your system is completely up to date, especially if you are running testing/unstable. For example, there were some fontconfig related bugs some weeks ago. Run (as root): dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig-config and make sure your fonts are correctly set up for your monitor (TFT vs. CRT). You could also try different fonts, to make sure this isn't a problem specific to a font package.
