When you have to finish more then $100k job and do it fast and there is no
store you can buy such adapter and you need somebody to install it under
dos or some exotic os $200 is not too much. Old adapter + little knowledge
= $400 in one afternoon.

Other option was network hub with thin ethernet and utp but that is even
harder to find.

On other CNC machine distributor asked round $7000 for upgrading internal
epson computer from 486 to PI. It's equipped with 2.5" notebook disk with
modified interface to force customers to upgrade internal computer when
anything in it fails.
