It did not work that way for me. But I created my partitions under /mnt, so maybe that's why. Also, I created them after installing and edited the fstab accordingly, rather than creating them during the installation and having the installer add them to fstab. I *think* if you do it during installation, then you might get the results you want. All I did was add each partition (in my case, /mnt/audio, /mnt/video, etc.) to the bookmarks with Nautilus: menu item "Bookmarks => +Add bookmark." That added them to the Nautilus sidebar and to the Places menu on the Gnome panel.
