I'm not running Gnome -- I run IceWm - there are no applets other than the two panel monitors...cpu and net traffic and I have never seen Xorg over 2 or 3 % even with those. If I login on another terminal Xorg doesn't even appear in the top list. I don't think I have ever seen Xorg or its predecessor take up more than 5% of cpu time, that's why I find this so strange.
