Hmmm. Do you really mean "workspaces" here? In Gnome 1, there were "workspaces" and "viewports". Workspaces were completely disconnected; you could move a window from workspace to workspace using window menu entries (e.g. "Move to workspace 2"), but otherwise the workspaces were independent. Viewports were different; it was as if your workspace was, in each of X-Y directions, just as large as normal, or 2x as large, or 3x as large; and you could move your view over to another, non-overlapping viewport. Your desktop icons, sticky windows (like people normally use gkrellm), etc., would appear in the proper places when you changed viewports. For all practical purposes, workspaces and viewports behaved identically, *except* to move a window to a different viewport, you simply dragged it to the edge of your screen so that it stuck into the next viewport, then changed viewports and dragged the portion sticking into the new viewport to where you wanted the window to go. You could also, if you configured it so, change your current viewport by moving your mouse to the edge of the screen in the appropriate direction. Not all window managers supported viewports, but some (e.g. sawfish) did. It sounds from your use of the word "drag" like you're referring to viewports. In Gnome 2, multiple workspaces are still around, and are configurable either through the Desktop Preferences options, or through adding a "Workspace Switcher" applet to your panel and configuring its preferences. Viewports, OTOH, are not supported by metacity, the default window manager for Gnome 2. If you switch to sawfish, you may be able to get them back, I dunno. -c -- Chris Metzler [EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove "snip-me." to email) "As a child I understood how to give; I have forgotten this grace since I have become civilized." - Chief Luther Standing Bear -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
