To encrypt:

tar -cvf - directory | gpg -c > [encrypted_file] && rm -rf directory

To decrypt:

gpg -d [encrypted_file] | tar -xf -

Before doing this, give it a spin with a test directory because I've
just typed this in without trying and testing.
