Others have told you how to check for this. If dma is not enabled on your hard
drive, it can explain why the computer is so slow! Please turn it on if
possible. Check documentation if dma is possible for your drive. For most
modern hard drives it is possible to enable dma.

ok. Now if you disable X completely, do you experience any random freezes?
Basically I am trying to figure out if your problem is hardware or software
related.

If the random freezes take place even when you are not using X, I would check
for badblocks, bad ram.
