If it helps anyone to know, I did this changing more than just the motherboard (although I am not running X on that machine). The original system was running on an old AMD P2 machine. I made sure to install a basic 386 kernel first instead of the AMD-specific kernel I was using. Then I pulled the hard drive out, and plugged it into an Intel P3, upgraded the kernel, and everything is worked perfectly, and in a lot less time than it would have taken me to reinstall the system.
