If this is the case which one is recommended > amd64 or i386? well, that depends on what you want to do... while for some applications, the 64bit extentions can be a performance boost, not all apps work in 64bit mode... you can however install a 32bit chroot (there is a howto somewhere for that)... for a server _most likly_ everything should work in 64bit...
