unpack the kernel source tree in /usr/src
cd to /usr/src/linux-2.whateveryouhave
configure your options with make-menuconfig
build the deb with  make-kpkg kernel_image
cd ..
install it w dpkg -i kernel-image-whateveryouhave_i386.deb
