Then use 686.
I just installed Etch on my spare partition. OK, I have only the first
DVD, and no network on it yet (no ndiswrapper included), but I noticed
also no k8 kernel. k7 works fine on my Turion64 though for now - I'll
recompile later.

I'm not the OP :), but that's good advice. I already use a self
compiled kernel with 64 bit options.
