Since you need only basic functions use "mailfilter" to drop the messages on the Server, then download it with "fetchmail" and filter it with "procmail" to a maildir ~/Maildir/ And last not least, install "courier-imap" which will work Out-of-The-Box for "Mozilla", "Thunderbird" or any other IMAP capable MUA.
