For wheat reason 4th step and not "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart" (or gdm 
restart) at 6th step?

  
Not everybody starts X with a display manager.  Sometimes the display 
manager is broken.  Startx should always start X even if the display 
manager is broken.  If the display manager is not broken then gdm/kdm 
should also work.
