Did u try using ethtool ? how about putting "spanning-tree
portfast" on the switch port ?

Hmm, that's pretty weird.
I only have one box where I have to force the media type option
(to 10baseT-FD) and there I have it in a script that runs at S41
and it works just fine. :-/
