Hi Pete, recently i got the same error. you have to remove the /usr/X11R6/lib line from your /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig afterwards. i think the library directory X11R6 is no longer used in recent debian systems and there are residing old librarys which don't contain that symbol.
