Dash is coded quite well, and makes it semi-easy to "plug in" more functionality as it isolated built ins like printf, test, etc .. so a collection of patches that let you pick what functionality you wanted would be the goal.
Its widely used...but not many enhancements have been made since Herbert Xu ported it over to Linux. The mail check is default in most interactive shells, and that was the easiest thing to take out :) When I'm able to get a bit more done I'll send out some of the patches to try. I have a few other very neat but very small utilities I want to get circulated in the public domain too.
