Odd.  I didn't have to do any "hacking" to get OpenLDAP on Sarge and Mac
OS X 10.4 to cooperate.  I mean, beyond the retarded way in which it
seems to assume TLS == SSL, which Red Hat's authconfig-gtk tool (I think
it's Red Hat's tool) seems to assume.

I must say, though, that I have not tried kerberos.

If you can get those two things going, then OpenAFS is your best bet,
which also supports MacOS X.
