I have the impression that Xorg often overrides the LCD/CRT on/off keys
of laptops, while XFree86 was less "aggressive". You will have to adapt
to this beahvior. Some graphics cards have a simple command line tool to
switch the displays on and off, for others you have to change your
xorg.conf to a "cloning" configuration. We need to know what your
graphics hardware is in order to help your further. Please post the
output of

lspci | egrep -i 'vga|video'

and tell us if you start X from the command line or if you use [xkg]dm
for graphical log-in.
