I use ubuntu 6.0lts, and mysql5 php5, I input my password with
phpmyadmin,and chose
MD5.

Are you sure that both sides are using the correct md5? That is, either
a straight md5 or a salted modified md5 (like what is generally used by
shadow on *nix)? This caught me by surprise when I was setting up a
mail server with virtual users in a database.
