Of course you don't need. I use getmail-> maildrop sorting directly to Maildirs. You can even forget maildrop as getmail can deliver directly to maildir and even do some basic sorting. Use your MUA of choice to read the mail (Sylpheed-Claws-GTK2 for GUI and mutt for TUI). IMAP is usefull for other setups, other nifty stuff...
