Was solved by upgrading to kernel-package 10.057. Upon suggestion by the
-ck mailing list.
The message it produces is most confusing:

The UTS Release version in include/linux/version.h ""does not match
current version: "2.6.18-ck1"
Please correct this.make:

You do that and the result is nil because it gets wiped out by make-kpkg.
BTW this is the first time since using make-kpkg for how many years?
that it failed because of the wrong version.
