How to use NIS or Ldap to manage remote counts

Hi,
I have clients connected to a server, I want to manage (plan the access to the clients with  cron for example in the server ) the access ( the authentification) thru the server ( using ldap or NIS ???).

I don't need samba, I haven't wind$ machines
any suggestion or easy doc is welcome
