I also created another file (in oowriter) for testing purposes, using a couple of different fonts - truetype and type 1.
Interestingly enough the TT font that I installed 'manually' (BaarMetanoia) and the type1 font LMRoman produced correct output as displayed by
gs -sDEVICE=x11alpha (and in print).
