My ICP Vortex from 1998 (3 channels) was died last year and I had to buy a new one using the same Harddrives... No problems with ICP Vortex. Same if you are using 3Ware Controller (PATA and SATA) I use both and have no problems switchin from a 4 channel 3w7506-4LP to a 12 channel 3W85xx-12 > With software raid, you could always stick your disks into the next PC > (as long as not too many disks fail at once). Not right, since I was running into Troubles updating from linux 2.4 to 2.6 since many things had changed.
