Just to be eliminate one simple and obvious potential source of problems -- aren't you by a chance using KDE? The problem then would be that KDE's arts sound daemon occupies all sound resources. You have to go to Control Center/Sound & Multimedia/Sound System/General and check Auto-suspend checkbox.
