Well Alice -- let's see how deep this rabbit hole goes :-) I too can NOT (as of yet) get Epiphany to alter it's middle-click either = it opens a new tab, no matter which setting I give it. I too have changed the about:config entry fro TRUE to FALSE -- just now...AND I've closed the browser and restarted it -- no go :-( See this; (notice the mozilla items that I put the many ******'s around ...below) ============================== ~$ apt-cache show epiphany-browser Package: epiphany-browser Priority: optional Section: gnome Installed-Size: 7324 Maintainer: Jordi Mallach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Architecture: i386 Version: 1.4.8-3 Provides: www-browser Depends: libart-2.0-2 (>= 2.3.16), libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.7.2), libbonobo2-0 (>= 2.8.0), libbonoboui2-0 (>= 2.5.4), libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-21), libgcc1 (>= 1:3.4.1-3), libgconf2-4 (>= 2.8.1), libglade2-0 (>=1:2.4.2-2), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.6.0), libgnome2-0 (>= 2.8.0), libgnomecanvas2-0 (>= 2.6.0), libgnomeui-0 (>= 2.8.0), libgnomevfs2-0 (>= 2.8.3-7), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.6.0), libice6 | xlibs (>> 4.1.0), liborbit2 (>= 1:2.10.0), libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.8.1), libpopt0 (>= 1.7), libsm6 | xlibs (>> 4.1.0), libstdc++5 (>= 1:3.3.4-1), libx11-6 | xlibs (>> 4.1.0), libxml2 (>= 2.6.16), zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1), *********mozilla-browser********* (>= 2:1.7.6), mozilla-psm (>= 2:1.7.6), scrollkeeper, gconf2 (>= 2.2.0), debconf, gnome-icon-theme (>= 1.0.6) Recommends: yelp, epiphany-extensions Suggests: mozilla-bonobo **********Conflicts: mozilla-browser (>= 2:1.8)*************** Filename: pool/main/e/epiphany-browser/epiphany-browser_1.4.8-3_i386.deb Size: 3030926 MD5sum: 7d8f50972c9e4e4ba879a13f65c3a132 Description: Intuitive GNOME web browser A simple yet powerful GNOME web browser targeted at non-technical users. Its principles are simplicity and standards compliance. Simplicity is achieved by a well designed user interface and reliance on external applications for performing external tasks (such as reading email). Simplicity should not mean less powerful. Standards compliance is achieved on the HTML side by using the Gecko rendering engine, as developed for the Mozilla browser; and on the user interface side by closely following the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and by close integration with the GNOME desktop. =============================================== Hopefully you don't try this command (as I did at first); ~$ apt-cache show epiphany Notice, if you leave off the '-browser' part you'll get something ENTIRLY different :-) So I found what I wanted eventually; DEPENDS = greater than or equal to mozilla-browser 1.7.6 - but CONFLICTS with greater than or equal to 1.8 -- go figure! :-o Now...I wonder what will happen when I 'eventually' Reboot the system (Up for a few days now). Also - I have BOTH GNOME and KDE installed, but Gnome _had_ been default, but I changed that as soon as I did this install of Debian 3.1r1, and installed KDE - and switched (dpkg-reconfigure kdm) to 'kdm' from 'gdm'. IOW, for some unknown reason, the Debian Installer chose Gnome over KDE for me - or I likely missed something during the Setup. Once I did the Base-config, I loaded up on X and then KDE stuff -- in the meantime, the 'gdm' kept wanting me to login upon every reboot...I may have played around with some GNOME apps before fully installing and using KDE. So <sigh> Conflict between GTK+ and QT ...eh? I don't know There are many many remnants of gnome left on this box, and I still use an occassional app (like Epiphany) and I have NOT yet fired up Mozilla Suite (Installed), nor Firefox (not Installed) -- so perhaps in there somewhere is a clue? Most of my experience using... * about:config * Prefs.js and User.js * userChrome.css (originally named and stored as "userChrome-example.css") * userContent.css (originally named and stored as "userContent-example.css") Once one edits these last 2 files, you remove the -example, and now you have the Orig -example file _and_ your customized *user* files. ...I learned while I was running win98 -- On Debian; I don't know exactly where, and more specifically "which" files these browsers are reading to get their settings, but I'll keep looking. I mean I've found *some* that look like they're the culprit, but I'll have to play with it more. Perhaps I'll fire up Mozilla just to take a peek at what it's Settings are. I think Linux just mounted my 3 winblows partitions without me telling it to -- I guess it's time to reboot....<double sigh> ...but it's likely more KDE's fault (and the lack of enough RAM) than the underlying kernel's.
