Huh. I tried this, and couldn't reproduce your problem either. I forget: was there a reason you didn't want to use tar? That's usually what I do: tar -czf mydirectory.tar.gz mydirectory will create the tar.gz, and tar -xzf mydirectory.tar.gz will create mydirectory again. M
