Acroread doesn't depend on CUPS, it depends on libcupsys2. No doubt so that it can do printer discovery. Mozilla does the same thing. But you could still use the far superior lprng if you liked. :) As for KDE... I imagine what's actually going on is that some sub-part of the KDE meta-package depends on CUPS (or libcupsys2), and so messing with that wants to remove the meta-package.
