Greetings. I am an old hardware engineer with many years of working on systems hardware. I recently decided to switch to Linux, and so began a search for a desktop replacement. My experience has been frustrating, and I wanted to ask advice.

I Can can run live, from Knoppix and Puppy. I like Knoppix and even installed it to hard drive and played with it for a day. I see there is little support from the broader Linux community, so decided to install the full Debian. I have done the net install now, 3 different times. Each time, I get the system running, but no video to the graphical desktop.
So you need to log -in on the console as root and then install a graphical desktop manager as+ your xfree server:
gnome or KDE
i personally use both of them and i'm quite happy as with Gnome ,as with KDE:
#apt-get .for installing of your graphcal server Xfree86
#apt-get install gnome gdm or
#apt-get install kde or
#apt-get install x-window-system kde-core kadebasekdeutils kdenetwork kdegraphics kdeadmin kdepim kde-i18n-en kdm , if you have installed the aptitude package on your system you can also use :if not firstly #apt-get *install aptitude and then,*
#aptitude install gnome-desktop-environment or
#aptitude install kde
if you achieve this then log-in to your desktop and then if choose gnome install the synaptic GUI packet manager,it's plendid:
#apt-get install synaptic or
#aptitude install synaptic
When you get this manager it should be kind of joke for you to go furthur with newer packet installations; NOTE: you must read carefully all kind of dependencies,for if you delete special packets ,you can get in trouble,try to log all your changes...
another option:
login as root put the cd back i your optical device and type:
#base-config
then choose to install packets and mark the desktop environment to be installed on your system,so after that you'll get your Gnome desktop. you will be promped to installed the right mouse drivers ,video and monitor resolution;
for a three-button  wheel mouse:
choose psaux and imPS/2,then choose the right driver for your graphics card and choose as more as possible screen resolutions,reffer to you technical refernce of your display for more tech specs,but you're a tech guy you're aware of all that stuff...
note in /etc/apt/sources.list
add one of the following sources:

for Sarge(stable):
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
for Sid(splendid,unstable):
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
I am using a Gateway with Intel 810 internal video. I switched to an ATI video card, and installed it a second time, still no luck. I then edited the Xxxxx (forgive me, but my memory failes me here) file which is the config for the X-windows and was able to confirm first it chose VESA for the video, second time, it chose ATI, and I even edited it to try the standard VGA driver.

Can you point me to a beginner help, or know anyone who might be a mentor for a beginner user? This is not so much a bug report as it is an install quirk. Thank you for any help.
