To nail that down, go to /boot, and do: grep SMB config-2.2.20-idepci (or "config-2.4.18-bf2.4" if you use that kernel) If you get (among other things) "#CONFIG_SMB_FS is not set" then you'll need to configure and compile a kernel with SMBFS support.
