It does not.
On my Canon A410:

/home/hugoFri Apr 28-09:02:08HDA7# gphoto2 --auto-detect
Model                          Port
----------------------------------------------------------
USB PTP Class Camera           usb:
USB PTP Class Camera           usb:001,005

and gphoto2 -P uploads the jpegs and avi's.
