Depends how old. I have KDE on some of my middle-aged notebooks (64MB, 166Mhz) and it runs ok. Though I normally prefer to use fvwm because it doesn't use up as much of the valuable 800x480 display area with task bars etc.. On my older (66Mhz, 32Mb 486) machines they are fine with fvwm but I don't think they would handle KDE/GNOME very comfortably. As far as Gnome vs KDE goes, I don't think there is enough in it to worry about.
