Commenting out all FontPaths but these in /etc/xorg.conf
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
allowed me to login again with gdm (no startx just yet).
I also changed the module path:
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
