Upgrading from one branch to another should *never* be done while
you sleep.  Downloading the packages, though, is another story.

So, before you go to sleep/party/etc:

$ su -
# apt-get -y -d dist-upgrade

Then, the next {whenever}, while you are watching:

# apt-get install apt dpkg

# apt-get upgrade

(There will be packages held back.  To see the list of held-back
packages, run that command again.)

# apt-get upgrade 

(Now, get ready to copy/paste with your mouse...  There will be
many, so do them in chunks of 20ish.)

#apt-get install {the list of held-back packages}

Finally, you'll be complete.  Reboot.

Anything that's marked "testing" is going to have bugs occasionally.
You should be smart enough to figure that out.  So, think about
whether you want to stay with Sarge or not.
