I had a similar problem. I tried to install Sarge (i386) with the 2.6
kernel (option "linux26" did work for me) on my new SATA drive, but the
installer wouldn't find the HDD. So I switched to Etch and this worked
w/o any problems.

Hello List,
I've downloaded the two AMD64 DVD Images and tried to install it on
my computer. Everything went well until I came to the point, where I
have to partitioning my hard drive. The Installer leaves me with the
message, that he cannot find it. It is a 160 GB Sata drive, and I have
no clue how to fix the problem.
Have you using the linux26 version of the installer? (Type linux26 at
the boot screen.)
Hope this helps,
