I'm trying to install Debian for the first time. My machine is a
VirtualPC (version 7.0.2) virtual machine (configured with 256MB RAM
and shared networking) running under Mac OS 10.4.5. I'm doing the
net install (from debian-31r1a-i386-netinst.iso).
The initial install went fine; during the process, I saw a message
about configuring DHCP, and it seemed to do that successfully as far
as I could tell. But something must be wrong, because after the
reboot, I'm now stuck at the "Apt configuration" dialog. It asks me
to choose the method (I've tried both ftp and http) and the mirror
(I've tried about four different ones now), and then it goes to a big
black "Testing apt sources..." screen. It hangs there for a wile,
then eventually returns to the blue screen and spews a bunch of error
messages, including the fact that it was unable to resolve the mirror
DNS name. Then, of course, it takes me right back to the "Apt
configuration" screen.
So now what do I do? It looks like it doesn't have a valid network
connection, but doesn't realize this, nor do I see anyplace to change
network settings. It's just stuck in this loop.
Note that I searched for information on installing Debian on
VirtualPC, and found some apparent advice at
<http://vpc.visualwin.com/index.aspx>, but was unable to decipher its
meaning. (On a lark, I did cancel the Apt configuration step, tried
"execute shell", and typed the "modprobe tulip" incantation suggested
at the above site. I then typed "exit" and tried Apt configuration
again, but the result was exactly the same as before.)
Any help will be greatly appreciated. But please remember, I'm a Mac
user and new to Linux, so speak slowly and use small words.
Thanks,
- Joe
