Are you sure that the machine freezes, a.e. no hard disk activity et al.?! I had this problem with the 2.5.x series after about 2.5.47 (AFAIKR...), because I forgot to compile in input core support. BTW: 2.5.70 is a little bit faster and runs very well on the Fujitsu- Siemens Scenic 600 I use in the Uni.
