Thanks, Mirko. The fix offered late in 350235 (which I somehow missed) works. It is to replace the relevant line in /etc/udev/persistent.rules to read: BUS=="ide", SYSFS{block/removable}=="1", DRIVER!="ide-cdrom", GOTO="no_volume As you asked, I have added my comments there.
