Hi Christophe,

I found the following howto to be a very good read:

Debian-Binary-Package-Building-HOWTO

It should be installed already, if not do e.g.
apt-get install doc-linux-text; it is under /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt.
It goes through the basic steps of building a Debian package without all
the details given in the package apt-howto. I got my packages installed
very quickly this way.
