Fixed the problem. In case somebody else is interested:
PHP loads different modules depending on how it is called. From the command line it looks at /etc/php5.0/conf.d , when called via apache2 it looks at /etc/php5.0/apache2/conf.d . Altough most (all?) modules are added to /etc/php5.0/conf.d automaticaly, none are added to the apache2 setup by default. Add a link in /etc/php5.0/apache2/conf.d and restart apache to get it working.
