while I have not carried out the process to its end, the gcc-base source has all the configure options for the i960 target, so I'd say that it shouldn't be a problem to build gcc as a i960 cross-compiler ... after playing around with gcc source from 'Linux from Scratch' I got a compilation off gcc which failed while assembling. So if you invest some time, you should be able to get a working gcc tool-chain. The configure option I used was ./configure --target=i960-rtems --enable-obsolete As there is a quite a bit more to cross compiling than gcc I'd also recommend some documentation about cross-compiling.
