When everything works the way it's supposed to, X does correctly determine DPI. Working as it should simply doesn't happen often enough. It requires properly functioning DDC, which older displays don't have or don't have correctly implemented; and which many (most?) modern flat panel displays don't have correctly implemented, since it isn't required for acceptable windoze operation. -- "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."
