I have juste experienced the same trouble with my geforce 2 Mx, various 2.6
kernels, xorg and mesalibs provided by bakcports.org.
All I saw is the nvidia logo then... just pitch black and no control...With
sarge's xfree, X just crashes and give the hand on a console.
The same pc worked with a kubuntu so I don't understand why it crashes here...
Like you I don't need a linux for games (windows is here for that) but it is
quite frustrating.
Before the nvidia logo, I just have the time to see a "Remove nvidia TLS link"
or something, do you see the same ?
