Let me reiterate the main problem -- I tried to dist-upgrade my system (debian sid, about 6 months outdated, running on a blue & white Mac g3), and when udev wouldn't install, I apt-getted a newer kernel to try again; rebooted, & now my system doesn't find /dev/hda -- which is where my /var is located, which means apt-get doesn't work at all, so udev can't be installed... just tried creating the devices manually as per Linas's suggestion but no go. took a peek in syslog and it seems the cdrom drive is being identified as /dev/hda; the native pci bus is invisible. tried modprobing the generic ide driver but, while that succeeded, no /dev/hd devices were created. So it appears to me that my ide bus is now invisible somehow. tried lspci and it seems some things are missing -- e.g. no ethernet device is showing (and in fact ifup eth0 gives a "no such device" error); but there is a listing for Silicon Image, Inc.. PCI 0646 (rev 5) Not sure if that is my ide controller or not. Anyway, so something fundamental appears to be screwed up, and I"m not sure how to proceed next.
