Package Maintainence

I replaced Knoppix with Debian.  I was running mysql 5.something and 
have modified mySqlNavigator to allow me to view and edit stored procs 
and functions.  Synaptic is pointing to Stable, but I want a newer 
version of mySql.  I did this in the past by several different methods 
(changing my sources.list and using KPackage or  using apt-get  or dpkg 
or dselect).  Is there a better way to do this?  I realize that if I mix 
sources I am on my own and can get in trouble.  I am just looking for 
suggestions.
