I still keep having similar problem even with the latest debian installer (kernel 2.6.12). Having SATA disk and IDE CDROM I am unable to install Debian. Installer reports that CDROM was not found. I am able to make it installed using the trick with manual loading the ide-generic ... But after reboot the system is not able to mount the CDROM anymore.
If I play with initrd using yaird (should rather be named weird :-), then I end up with unbootable system. This happens when installing with kernel 2.6. With kernel 2.4 (install 2.4) everything works fine. It seems as if /etc/modules is completely ignored. Knoppix 4.0.2, for instance, does recognize the CD, and the ide modules are loaded before ata_piix, but I haven't found out how to force that in my case. Any help?
