If you're running GNOME, you might want to go with one of the former default (more or less) GNOME wms. I.e. Enlightenment (http://enlightenment.org/ - I personally hate this one) or Sawfish (http://sawmill.sourceforge.net/ - pretty neat, even though it's not ratpoison (http://ratpoison.nongnu.org/)).
