This assumes a best case scenario that you will never need to get some

up a new kernel will be painful.
You seem to be equating initrd to modular kernel. I have the drivers for
my present hardware compiled in, but I can add modules if I want to. What
do I need initrd for?
Have I started a flame war? die flames die!
seriously though, in my situation, its not unusual for me to swap
hardrives around to different boxes. I guess that makes me a prime
candidate for initrd.
